Assessment

It is the responsibility of the assessor to assess property in accordance with the law and accepted practices. Assessment Notices are sent to property owners annually in late February.

Board of Review

A Board of Review is not the assessor. The Board of Review is, in fact, embodied to hear petitions that challenge a decision of the assessor. It is the Board of Review’s responsibility to make an independent judgment based on evidence provided by the individual petitioner.

The Board of Review is required to meet in March of each year. If there is business to conduct, the Board of Review shall also meet in July and/or December. All meetings are open to the public, pursuant to Act Number 266 of the Public Acts of 1976.

The Canton Township 2024 Board of Review will conduct hearings March 12, 13, and 14, 2024, for appeals from property owners regarding the 2024 Assessment. Hearings are held at the Canton Township Administration Building, 1150 S Canton Center Road by appointment.

Upon receipt of your Assessment Notice (i.e., estimated the last week in February 2024), you may call the Assessor’s Office at 734-394-5111 to schedule an appeal appointment on March 12, 13, or 14, 2024. You also have the option to appeal by letter; written appeals must be received in the Assessor’s Office by 9:00 pm, on Thursday, March 14, 2024. Postmarks are not accepted. Appeals by letter are fully considered as a formal petition.
